The headquarters of Barmenia Insurances have been located on the southern slopes of Wuppertal since 1965. The company’s development required additional jobs and more training space for more than 1,500 employees. Also due to the age of the existing buildings a renovation and extension was required. Especially against this background, Barmenia decided in 2001 to expand the site with a contiguous building of three building blocks and to renovate and overhaul an existing building. Other parts of the building were dismantled for this purpose. The plant, which has not yet been compacted, received optimized space utilization and improved workplace quality thanks to the new building. Remodeling, renovation and new construction: These three cornerstones were decisive for the Barmenia project, which ran for over 10 years. This showed the complexity of the project in the sequence of the individual construction phases, all of which were carried out during ongoing operation. There was also a challenge on the ground: at the renovation in 2016, the planners opted for a underfloor ventilation that at the same time met the requirements of the upper fire protection class in the existing building. A newly developed adhesive and NYLTECC carpet with an air-distibuting substructure made it possible to realize it. For suitability, the climate double floors were tested by the independent Textile Flooring Institute Aachen.
